BTVS Episode Poll: 5.19 Tough Love

NoShoes
Point 1: gabrielleabelle writes excellent Buffy commentary.

Point 2: She was doing a fun series of polls, going through each episode in order.

Point 3: She was just heading into the home stretch of Season 5 when life dictated (as life often does) a hiatus of indefinite length.

Point 4: I now have a bad case of Season Fivus Interruptus and am itching to think way too hard about the final few episodes of Season 5 and then move on to Season 6.

So! Here is my poll, such as it is. I have turned on open commenting in case people I don't know want to participate.

Poll #1860826 Tough Love
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 11

1. This episode is called "Tough Love," obviously following thematically on last week's "Intervention." Is that a good title for this episode?

#1 : Until creating this poll I had never thought about the recurring tough love theme in the episode, in both the classic "getting people to shape up" sense, and the sense of lough itself being tough -- tough to act on, and, itself, a tough and resilient force.

For some reason the image that comes to mind when I think about the title is Glory squeezing Tara's hand until it bleeds.

#5 other: I have felt all of these things (forced, realistic, disturbing, etc.) at different points during the argument. It's almost, but not quite, an incredibly realistic couples argument.

PS: I've never done a poll before and apologize if I did something wrong.

I didn't know that you started this to carry on gabrielleabelle's polls - nifty! (I was upset to realize that just as I discovered her site, and BtVS, she was having to drop out of fandom writer *sniffle*)

I really will have to rewatch this ep before I can answer the poll. I do think that the Willow/Tara argument is very realistic because that's what happens when my partner and I argue - it starts out about one thing, it ends up about another, etc. (Except our version is much louder and a lot less cute.)

She has a lot of great material to explore even if she never writes anything new.

Ok indeed - I think I've read most of her metas so far, but am still plowing through (the Spuffier ones I can't help but re-read of course, esp the S7 ones.)

Hi again! I've been perusing Gabrielleabelle's LJ and am glad to see you're continuing the polls.

Regarding question 2: I like the repetition, not only for the thematic repetition but also for the character development. In "Tough Love" Willow gains a big boost of confidence, particularly in her ability to handle black magic. That's important for her growth as a character.

(I do also like that in "Tough Love", Willow is a badass and I'm totally cheering her on, then in S6 she's a badass and disturbs me.)

For question 5, I chose "other", because I would have picked "All of the above." Or actually 1,3, and 4, cause it doesn't feel forced to me.

Yes! Definitely!
